Instructional System at the NIOS is a Multi - Channel Approach. Students are encouraged to become self learners with the help of educational material provided by the NIOS. The NIOS also provides a wide range of facilities to help students gain a better understanding of their subjects.

In the NIOS, you have to learn on your own, i.e. you must become a self-learner. You can learn at your own speed and at your convenience. For this, specially designed printed self-instructional materials will be provided to you on different subjects. Also, you will receive other support materials, like audio cassettes, practical manuals, glossaries and study guides, wherever relevant and available. Study materials will be sent to the study centres/AIs. You should collect these study materials from the AIs which you are attached to. Your Course fee includes the price of the study materials. Do not pay anything extra for these. |
Although your enrolment is valid for five years, every effort is made to supply the study material in instalments as soon as possible in the first year of admission.
However, you would receive the following book immediately on admission:
Open Schooling- How to make best use of ........ This book will introduce you to the world of open learning-- its methods and procedures. It covers important issues like how to make best use of self-instructional material, personal contact programme and how to prepare for examination. Read this carefully. It will be very useful.

NIOS Offers its Courses mainly in Hindi, English and Urdu medium.You can choose any medium of instructions.At the Secondary level, besides these mediums, the choice of medium is also available in Telugu, Gujarati, Marathi and Malayalam.

You should think and choose your subjects carefully keeping in view your plans for higher studies, specific jobs etc.
If you wish to use NIOS Certificate for higher studies, it is in your own interest that you keep in mind the requirements of the Boards/Universities you wish to join.
Some Boards/Universities require specific subject combinations for admission to the Institutions affiliated to them. For example, for medical course, various institutes will expect you to have passed with a combination of Chemistry, Physics and Biology along with two languages.
Likewise immediately after your Senior Secondary Examination, if you wish to go in for jobs of Personal Assistants, Stenographers, or Office Assistants, you are advised to offer one language, Secretarial Practice, Stenography and Typing as a package course along with one more subject of your choice. You can also offer additional subject(s) either at the time of admission or during course of study, if you so desire or it is required.

Your admission to a particular course in NIOS will be confirmed by NIOS by issuing an Identity Card and a computerised confirmation letter. While the identity card will be filled up by you, the computerised confirmation letter will give your admission particulars as it exist in our database.
Please check the particulars given on the confirmation letter. Discrepancies, if any, may be brought to the notice of the study centres immediately. Identity Cards will be issued only once and no modified Identity Cards will be issued on subsequent changes/corrections of admission particulars.
Candidates are requested to keep the Identity Cards under safe custody till they complete their study as the same also serves as hall ticket.
Duplicate identity card will be issued if the original is lost. An FIR is to be lodged with the concerned police station. An Application on a plain paper accompanied by copy of FIR, a bank draft of Rs.50/- drawn in favour of Secretary, National Open School and a photograph duly attested by the co-ordinator of AI on its back may be sent to the Secretary, National Open School, for this purpose.
During the admission period of five years you can also change one or more subject(s) or take one/two additional subject provided the total number of subjects does not exceed seven during the course of study, i.e. within four years of registration so that you can appear in Public Examinations within the validity of admission period.
The last date for applying for the change of subjects or for additional subject during the course of study is:
You must apply through the AI on plain paper along with the prescribed fee of Rs. 90/- per subject in case of Secondary Course and Rs. 120/- per subject in case of Senior Secondary Course. This is chargeable from all categories of learners. The fee should be sent by a bank draft drawn in favour of Secretary, National Institute of Open Schooling payable at the concerned Regional Centre.
The concerned Regional Director of NIOS will confirm such change or addition of subjects through a post card sent at your mailing address under intimation tp your AI. Keep in contact with the AI and see that the necessary changes have been made by NIOS.
You should collect the study material for the changed subjects or additional subject(s) from the AI.
